Knee Replacement

Knee joint is one of the most complex joints in our body. Thanks to over 50 years research in the structure and function of the knee we now have an extremely successful technology and expertise in replacing the knee joint.

Contrary to popular belief knee replacement consists of resurfacing of the damaged bone with suitable metallic component. The whole bone is not replaced. In fact we try to preserve as much bone as possible.

Our knee joint is made up of three bones : Femur, Tibia and the Patella. In TKR the damaged surface of femur and tibia is replaced. The patella may or may not be replaced depending on the surgeon's judgment.

This allows correction of any deformity in the knee. (Bend knees can be straightened). Since there is no bone to bone friction there is marked relief in the pain during walking.

A well fitted knee prosthesis can last for many years. However, just like a normal knee joint it also wears with age. In young patients due to higher level of activity there is a possibility that they may require revision surgery later on. In older patients the prosthesis is expected to last for lifetime.

Modern knee prosthesis are designed to last over 20 years. These are made of extremely durable titanium and cobalt-chrome alloys. The implants are made to behave like the natural knees. With newer implants knee bending up to 130° is possible.

Not all patients require Knee Replacement. Correct patient selection is the most important criteria for successful TKR. Knee Replacement is never done in grade I or grade II arthritis. It is most commonly done in grade IV Osteoarthritis after all conservative methods have failed to give significant pain relief. If proper treatment is done at right time it’s possible to delay surgery for many years.

In India many people don't take good care of their knees and tend to ignore their knee problems for several years. This delay in treatment is very bad for their knees. In many patients with early stage of arthritis it may be possible to preserve the function of their natural knees for several years without operation.

This is why I strongly advise you that don’t ignore knee pain. However in late cases knee replacement proviedes an excellent option for regaining pain free knee function.
